Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University Men's Basketball team (1-5, 0-2) got the chance to recharge the batteries over Thanksgiving Break after dropping a few competitive games in the final seconds in their first two conference games. Now that they are back, they look to get back on track when they head on the road once again to take on Davis & Elkins on Wednesday at 7:30 PM.
In each of the last two games the Cardinals have played, the game came down to the final seconds of the game, and unfortunately the Cardinals have also been on the losing end of those games. Last time out, they dropped a back and forth contest to Alderson Broaddus 83-80. Wheeling battled back from a ten-point second half deficit and put themselves in position to win the game. Wheeling's
Jarett Haines took the ball down the court and made a two-pointer with 13 seconds left in the game to tie things at 80-80. However, it was the Battlers who got the final blow, making a three-pointer at the buzzer to stealam 83-80 win from the Cardinals.
Haines and teammate
Jordan Reid have consistently proven to be two of the top offensive players for the Cardinals this season. Both players are averaging over 17 points per game, and both scored over the 20 point mark in each of the last two games. However, Haines has been the one leading the way over the last few games, scoring a combined 46 points over the last two games. Haines's season-high came against those Battlers, when he scored 26 points, and hit the game tying a shot in the loss. He is averaging 17.0 points per game, and is the team's leading scorer with 104 points in his first six games.
As for Reid, he has been right behind Haines, scoring 95 points in five games played this season. He finished with a season-high 25 points against the Battlers. He leads Wheeling with a 19.0 points per game this season, and has shot an impressive .480 from the floor this season. Reid is also creeping up on the 1,000 point mark, needing just 66 points to reach the mark. Reid has scored in double digits in every game he has played this season, and has scored 17 or more points in all but one game. If he continues to score the way he has this season, he will soon be the 46
th Cardinal all time to score 1,000 points in his career.
While Wheeling hasn't gotten off to the start they wanted in conference play, they have been in every contest. In their first two conference games this season, each game has come down to the final seconds of the game. They have shown great fight all season, but Head Coach
Chris Richardson is looking for his team to play a full 40 minutes. He knows he has a group that is motivated and know how to improve night in and night out. They are looking for their first conference win of the season and are hoping they can take care of business this week.
The Matchup
Wednesday will mark the 23
rd match-up between theses two teams, with Wheeling holding the advantage with a record of 18-5. However, the match-up is much more even when they play in Elkins, West Virginia with the all-time record sitting at 4-4. Wheeling has won three of the past four games between the two teams as they play in Elkins, West Virginia for the first time since the 2019-2020 season.
The last time these two faced off was on February 26
th, 2021 in a game that saw Wheeling come out on top 84-71. In that game, Wheeling used a 51-point second half to lift them to victory as they outscored the Senators in each half. Reid led the way with 23 points in the game and
Jay Gentry added 10 points. Wheeling looks to take some if that momentum from last season on the road with them this season.
