Philippi, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men's Basketball team (1-5, 0-2) hit the road on Tuesday evening when they took on Alderson Broaddus. The Cardinals scored 45 first-half points, but it wasn't enough as the Battlers battled back to win the game 83-80 in the final minutes of regulation.
Early on, the Cardinals were hot as
Jay Gentry scored the first five points of the game, and the Cardinals were out to an 8-0 lead just 90 seconds into the game.
Jordan Reid would add four points of his own, and Wheeling extended that lead to 12-5 by the five minute mark of the first half. However, Alderson Broaddus began to eat into that Wheeling lead, and went on an 8-2 run that brought the game back to within a point at 14-13. The score would be knotted up by the 11-minute mark when the Battlers' Eman Eman hit a two-pointer to bring the score to 17-17. The two teams would trade the next six points, and after 10 minutes of play the score sat at 20-20.
Alderson Broaddus would take its first lead of the game with a short 3-0 run, but Wheeling got those three points back on a free throw and a field goal by
Andrew Taylor. Taylor would then slam down a dunk that sent Wheeling off on an 8-2 run, pushing their newfound lead to 31-25. Gentry would help Wheeling maintain their lead, scoring five points in the next minute and a half to push the Wheeling lead to 39-32. Alderson Broaddus would get the ball rolling over the final three minutes of the half, outscoring Wheeling 11-6 during that span. However, Wheeling had built up enough of a lead that they could hold off the charge, and went into halftime with the score sitting at 45-43. Wheeling was effective from the floor in that first half, shooting 56%.
In the second half, their luck would go away as they saw that percentage drop to 35.14% and they weren't putting together enough runs to hold the lead. The Battlers came out of halftime hot, and took the lead on an 8-2 run that brought the score to 51-47. That lead was one that Alderson Broaddys would hold on to for the next 14 minutes as Wheeling was trying to find their way back into the game. The Cardinals tied things at 72-72 after a
Jarett Haines jumper completed the Wheeling come back. The back and forth commenced, as the lead changed hands three times over the next four minutes, and came out deadlocked at 78-78. Alderson Broaddus's Allen Collins hit a shot with 30 seconds left, and Haines responded with 13 seconds left. However, it would be the Battlers that delivered the final blow in the final second with a three-pointer that gave them the 83-80 win.
For the second game in a row, Wheeling had two twenty point scorers, and once again those two scorers were Haines and Reid. Haines led the way with a 26-point effort while finishing third on the team with five rebounds. Reid added 25 points of his own, and tied for the team lead with six rebounds.
John Korte and
Andrew Taylor added 10 points each, rounding out the double-digit scorers, and Korte added six rebounds. Wheeling now falls to 0-2 in conference play and will look to bounce back after Thanksgiving.
