Wheeling Has Four Compete at Findlay Open

Findlay, OH. – The Wheeling University Wrestling team was on the road on Saturday when they traveled to the Findlay open. They had no placers at the event, but they had a few wrestlers who moved through the consolation bracket and made runs towards being able to place at the event.

Leading the way at the event was freshman Mason Kuneff in the 184-pound weight class. He made it as far as the third round of the consolation bracket, going 1-2 in his three matches on the day. After starting the day off with a bye, Kuneff would fall in his second round match against Wisconsin Parkside's Reese Woracheck. He would move to the consolation bracket, and received a bye for his second round match. He would wrestle against Brent Burbules from Mercyhurst in the third round, and would end up falling 13-8 to end his day. Cloudy Meca would also make the second round of the consolation bracket in the 285 pound class. Meca wrestled twice on the day and fell in both matches, dropping his championship round 2 match in a 5-3 decision and his consolation match 12-3.

The other two wrestlers to take the mat for Wheeling were Brennon Reid and Austin Mele in the 157 and 164 pound class respectively. Reid went 1-2 in his three matches, after earning a third place finish last time out. He lost in the preliminaries of the championship round, but bounced back with a win in the consolation preliminary round with a 3-2 win over Findlay's Chase Moore. Reid ended his day in the first round of the consolation bracket, when he fell on a pinfall in just :42 seconds against Gannon's Nick Young. Mele rounded out the day for the Cardinals, competing in the 164-pound weight class, going 1-2 on the day. After winning his opening match in a 7-2 decision over Gannon's Devin Abbot, he dropped his final two matches of the day ending his night.

The Wheeling University Wrestling team is back in action on Sunday, December 5th, when they head to the Storm Open at Lake Erie College.
