Wheeling Prepares for Three-Day Event at Oberlin

Wheeling, W. Va. - After competing in back-to-back dual meets over the last three weeks, the Wheeling University Men's and Women's Swimming team prepare to head back to tournament play this week. They head to the Oberlin College Invitational, where they will compete from Thursday November 18th through Saturday November 20th.

In each of their first four events of the year, Wheeling's young swimmers have continuously improved their times race in and race out. This was no different last time out, when they traveled to take on Salem in a dual meet. Neither team was able to pick up a win on the scoreboard, but four different swimmers between the two teams placed at the event, and almost every swimmer set a new PR in their specific race.

On the men's side of the field, the Cardinals were led by sophomore Ethan Banks, who picked up a silver and a bronze in his three events. His best effort of the day came in the 200-Meter Backstroke, where he won the silver with a time of 2:16.92, beating out Salem's Caden Huffman. However, he started out his day with the 200-Meter Freestyle, where he finished third overall with a time of 1:55.60. After teammate Nathan Yost was named Mountain East Conference (MEC) Men's Swimmer of the Week two weeks ago, Banks was out trying to earn the title for himself this week.

On the women's side, Jade Miller was the leader, earning three of the team's four gold medals in her races. She swam in the 100 and 200-meter Backstroke as well as the 100-meter Fly to finish off a busy day. She set a new PR in both the 100-meter Backstroke (1:03.19) and the Fly (1:03.45) producing the top time of the day for both events. Miller has been one of Wheeling's top performers so far this season, and looks to continue that success in the pool.

The Oberlin College Invitational is a three-day tournament with races each day. There will be both a morning and an evening session on all three days, with swimmers competing in their events. For Wheeling, it is another chance for them to show what they can do when pitted up against some of the top swimmers from around the region. It will be another test for this young team as they look to continue to build a strong foundation for the program moving forward.

The Match-up

This week will mark the first time that Wheeling has headed to Oberlin, Ohio as a team. They will be one of several teams making the trip to the event, and are hoping to show that they can compete with some of the best if the best from around the region.
