Wheeling, W. Va. – After going toe to toe with The University of Charleston last time out, The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team played their second straight game against a ranked opponent when they faced Davis & Elkins on Wednesday at 7 PM. They hung with the Senators for most of the game but fell in the end 3-0.
Right from the get-go, Wheeling was playing an aggressive brand of soccer as they tried to get the early advantage. The Cardinals got off five of the first six shots in the game, but couldn't find the back of the net. Two of those shots came back-to-back by
Daniel Skarpness, but both shots missed the mark. Wheeling would pay for their inaccuracy as in the 22
nd minute, Davis & Elkins found their way on the board. The goal came off a corner kick as Alex Estrada-Avila took the kick and found the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Wheeling was outshot 11-7 in that first half, but their goalkeeper
Harry Firth had a great effort to keep his team within striking distance. In the first half making three saves in his 45 minutes in net, and just allowing the one goal. Wheeling was within striking distance and just needed to find a way to elude the Senator's defense and get on the board. However, the Senators would be the ones to up their offensive game in the second half and ended up putting the game out of reach in the 52
nd minute of the game.
Daniel Cerezo was the man who got his team on the board in the 52
nd minute of the game. He took a pass from Christian Bosquez and snuck it by Firth to bring the score to 2-0. Wheeling continued to battle throughout the second half, but the straw that broke the camel's back came in the 83
rd minute. Magnus Ammundsen made a move to get past the Cardinal's defense before tapping in the shot to make the score 3-0. Wheeling was unable to recover from there and ended up falling to the Senators by that same score.
A trio of Cardinals led the offensive effort with two shots each. Arm and Loynaz put each of his two shots on goal, while Skarpness and
Christian Ruud each got off two shots, but missed the mark both times. Firth allowed just the three goals on the game while making seven saves in net. The loss dropped Wheeling to 2-5 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play as they navigate the toughest part of their schedule. Over the final eight games, Wheeling is hoping to get things going in the right direction.
