Box Score

WHEELING, W. Va (Oct. 30)- The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team hit the road for their final road trip of the 2021 season to Davis & Elkins. They return to Wheeling with an improved record after shutting out the Senators 3-0.

Wheeling's offense started the game strong, putting a marker on the scoreboard within 10 minutes of the opening kick. Senior Forward Braedynn Porter found the back of the net just over nine minutes into the first half to give Wheeling the early 1-0 lead. Freshman Midfielder Mary DiFonzo was credited with the assist.

The Cardinals offense struck again just 14 minutes later when Senior Wing Kenadee Burgoyne scored in the 23rd minute to extend the lead to 2-0. Freshman Right Wing Talynn DeBartolo earned the assist on the score.

Just two minutes later, Porter found the net again. She connected in the 25th minute for her second score of the day, extending the Wheeling lead to 3-0.

That would be the end of scoring for the Cardinal offense and for the game overall. The Cardinal defense pitched a shutout for a 3-0 victory in Elkins for their fourth win of the season.

Porter lead the way for the Cardinals with her two goals on three shots. All three of her shots were on goal. Burgoyne connected on her only shot of the contest, while Sophomore Defender Zayna Hampton added three shots with one of them on goal.

The Senator offense had 27 shots in the game, 16 of those coming on goal. Sophomore Goalkeeper Mikayla Yarwood collected 14 saves in the shutout.

The Cardinals return home for their final two games of the season when they welcome West Virginia Wesleyan to Bishop Schmitt on Wednesday, November 3 for a 7 PM start. Wheeling will close out its season next Saturday when West Liberty makes the short trip to Washington Avenue. Opening kick is scheduled for 3 PM.
