Wheeling, W. Va. – After picking up a 3-0 sweep over West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday night, the Wheeling University Volleyball team (20-5, 11-1) were back in action Saturday afternoon against Davis & Elkins. They ended up sweeping their weekend set as they came through with a 3-0 win over the Senators to wrap up a busy day of Cardinals home action.
After struggling in the first two sets last night, Wheeling's hitters came out on fire throughout the match, with a .350+ hitting percentage in all three sets. It was back and forth early on in set one when the team's traded the first 10 points of the set. However, Wheeling took the early advantage, going on a 9-2 run that pushed their lead to 14-7 halfway through the set. Wheeling took advantage of Senator mistakes throughout the second half of the first set, and led 24-11 after a setting error put them on the brink of winning the match. Senior
Kayla Bekier ended that set with a kill and Wheeling would win the set 25-11.
Wheeling came out on a hot streak in set two, scoring seven of the first nine points of the set. However, Davis & Elkins battled back and ended up trying the game 15-15 in the second set. Wheeling was forced to battle through the final part of the second set, scoring 12 of the final 11 points in the set and won the second set 25-16. It was their setter
Karly Niesen that ended the second set with a kill, and Wheeling found themselves ahead 2-0 in the match. They were looking to sweep the match as they entered the final set of the night.
Wheeling would once again get out to a strong start in the third set, getting ahead by as much as 10-4 in the early going. The Cardinals never led by less than four points at any one point in the set. Wheeling finished it off with an 8-1 run that gave them a 25-14 win in the final set, and gave them the 3-0 win in the match. Wheeling finished that fourth set with a .400 hitting percentage and gave them a win in each of the six sets they played this weekend. It was another team effort in this one, as the offense stared throughout the night.
Bekier led the offense with one of her best day of the season. She recorded 14 kills on the day, and was the only Cardinal with double digit kills.
Lexi Reinert followed behind her with six kills on the day and sophomore
Karly Niesen had 29 assists in the game.
Audrey Francis led the defense with 19 digs and
Jenna Franks and
Karlee Lois each added seven digs on the day. Wheeling is now 11-1 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play and is looking to keep the success going at home as they play the final two weeks of the regular season.
