Wheeling Takes Final Road Trip of the Year to Davis & Elkins

Wheeling, W. VA- Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (3-11-1, 2-10-1) goes on the road for the final time this season, looking to capture their fourth win of the season. They will be competing against Mountain East Conference (MEC) foe Davis & Elkins College Saturday at 4 PM, in their first meeting with the Senators during the 2021 season.

This past Wednesday, the Cardinals dropped their seventh straight game after losing to Concord University 7-0. Wheeling struggled to get going offensively as they were only able to get off two shots, compared to Concords 37 on the night. Sophomore Rilei Levesque and Senior Braedyn Porter were both able to get off one shot. In the first 10 minutes, Concord was able to get two shots off, tough both missed. In the 11th minute, the Mountain Lions made their first goal. The 25th, 32nd, 52nd, 54th, 65th, and 77th minutes all added to their point total. Concord's Courtney Smith led the way as she scored twice on the evening.

Senior goalkeeper Mikayla Yarwood continued to play with high effort as she recorded another 10 save performance. Concord University took a total of 37 shots, with 17 of them being on goal. By Yarwood saving 10 out of the 17 shots on goal, she brought her season total in saves to 101. This ranks first in the MEC, 36 saves ahead of the next player, Olivia Kqira from Alderson Broaddus.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 5th place in the MEC North Division. As the season winds down, Wheeling will look to pick up another conference win against Davis & Elkins. Along with improving their conference record, this is an excellent opportunity for young players to gain experience. A win against the Senators will give Wheeling its third conference victory of the season.

The Match-Up

Facing against each other since 2002, Davis & Elkins holds the series 8 to 5. The Senators have also held the upper hand when playing at home as they have a 4-2 record against Wheeling University. The first time these two schools met in October of 2002, the Cardinals came out victorious by a score of 5-1. Wheeling looks to get back to its winning ways against Davis & Elkins to get their sixth victory of the series.

The last time Wheeling took on Davis & Elkins was in 2019, where they fell short 4-3 in overtime. Shiann Thomas and Braedynn Porter both contributed with a goal of their own. Porter's shot tied the game, giving the Cardinals a chance for victory in the overtime period.
