Frostburg, MD. – On Saturday night, the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (3-8-1, 2-7-1) finished off a big day for Wheeling in Frostburg, MD. Unfortunately, they couldn't finish things on a high note as they fell to Frostburg State 4-0. The Bobcats had several more offensive opportunities and the onslaught of shots was too much for Wheeling to handle.
The Bobcats had a majority of the offensive opportunities throughout the night, and that was reflected in the first 15 minutes of the game. Frostburg State got off the first six shots of the game, and Wheeling goalkeeper
Mikayla Yarwood was able to make saves on three of those shots. However, the Bobcats would breakthrough in the 17
th minute of the game when Lela Clark snuck one into the bottom left corner of the net to give Frostburg a 1-0 lead. Wheeling would continue to play defense while their offense tried to get things going over the next 19 minutes of play.
However, Wheeling got just one shot off in that time, and Frostburg would add to their lead. In the 36
th minute, Frostburg's Audra Curtin sent a pass to Toni Fiocco-Mizer, who found the net and gave Frostburg a 2-0 lead. That score would remain the same heading into halftime, as Frostburg continued to play well on offense. Wheeling was outshot 14-1 in that first half of play, and couldn't get that shot on goal.
Mary DiFonzo had the lone Wheeling shot, as the offense tried to find more opportunities. Even though she allowed the two goals, it was still a strong half for Yarwood, who made six saves on nine shots on net.
As the game moved to the second half, Frostburg was right back at it on offense. It took them just four minutes to add to their lead, as Fiocco-Mizer scored her second goal of the game. The score sat at 3-0 Bobcats in the 49
th minute of the game, and it was time for Wheeling to try and fight back. Wheeling would have a chance to get on the board in the 59
th minute when
Talynn DeBartolo sent a shot towards the net. However, it was saved and the next Cardinal shot came two minutes later when
Linda Obare sent one high over the net. The game reached its final score in the 79
th minute when the Bobcats scored their fourth goal and went on to win the game 4-0.
Wheeling ended the day being outshot 28-5 and having very few offensive opportunities. Of those five shots taken by the team, four came from two different players.
DeBartolo had two shots, putting two on net, and Obare finished the day with two shots, putting one on net. The other shot in the day was taken by DiFonzo to wrap up the Cardinals' offense. Yarwood tired her season-high making 10 saves in jet, but she faced too many shots leading to the four goals allowed. It was a good defensive effort all around, but the onslaught of Bobcat shots was just too much for the team to handle.
The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team is back in action on Wednesday night when they host Fairmont State at 7 PM.
