Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Defense Falls Just Short in Men's Soccer Loss to Frostburg

Frostburg, MD. – For 84 minutes of Saturday night's match-up with Frostburg State, the Wheeling University Men's Soccer team (4-8, 3-7) held the Bobcats off the board. However, in the 84th minute, Frostburg got to their defense scoring the lone goal of the night as Wheeling fell 1-0, and dropped to 3-7 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play.

After allowing five goals against the University of Charleston last time out, Wheeling was looking for a bounce-back game on the defensive side of the ball, and that's exactly what they got. As a whole, there weren't many opportunities for either offense in the first half. Combined, the teams took just five shots in the first half of the game, as good midfield play kept the ball bouncing between offensive zones. The first shot of the game wasn't taken until the 29th minute, as both teams tried to get on the board late in the first half. The first Wheeling shot came 10 minutes later when Miguel Martin nearly snuck one into the bottom left corner of the net before it was saved by the goalkeeper.

With neither team able to break through, the game went to halftime with the score still knotted up at 0-0. Martin's shot was the only one of the first half for the Cardinals, who were outshot 4-1 through the first 45 minutes of play. Of those four shots for the Bobcats, only one found its way on net, and it was saved by goalkeeper Harry Firth. With defensive ruling the day in the first half, it would be up to the offenses to try and figure things out. While the offensive level raised for both teams in the second half, they were still looking for that shot that would finally give them the advantage.

It didn't take nearly as long for the first shot of the second half to occur, as Martin was at it again in the 47th minute. He was denied another goal in the lower-left corner of the net, as the offenses went to work. Wheeling would not get off another shot until the 85th minute, by ended up sending three towards the net in the next ten minutes. Arm and Loynaz had the best chance in the 84th minute but was once again denied by the keeper. Frostburg would regain possession after that shot, and took the ball down the field once again. This time, the Bobcats wouldn't be denied as Daniel Juresic found the lower-left corner of the net, giving Frostburg the 1-0 lead. They would hold onto that the rest of the way and handed Wheeling their seventh conference loss of the season.

The offense was led by sophomore Harry Martin, who had three shots, two on goal. He was the only player for Wheeling to finish the night with multiple shots, taking three of his team's five shots in the game. Then other two shots came courtesy of Axel Grahn and Armando Loynaz. While the offensive opportunities weren't plentiful, a positive was that Wheeling was very accurate with their shots. Of the five they took, three landed on net in the game. Firth played all 90 minutes in net and had a solid effort making four saves on five shots on goal.

The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team is back in action on Wednesday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at 4 PM.
