Cards knocked off at No. 24 Glenville State, 92-78

GLENVILLE, W.Va. (Jan. 20) – The Wheeling University men's basketball team was handed a 92-78 loss at No. 24 Glenville State Wednesday evening inside the Waco Center.
 
The loss sends the Cardinals to 0-4 overall this season. Glenville State, who is ranked No. 24 in the latest D2SIDA Division II Poll and receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Poll, improve to 5-0 overall.
 
Senior Jarett Haines (Bronx, N.Y./New Rochelle) led the Cardinals with 24 points and added six rebounds. Freshman guard Trey Stoffer (West Layfayette, Ohio/Ridgewood) and junior Dayne Allen (St. Catherine, Jamaica/St. Catherine) each had 10 points, with Allen posting a team-best eight rebounds. Both were making their first starts of the season.
 
Wheeling opened up an 11-5 edge through the first four minutes of the contest. After Glenville State managed to knot the game up at 14-14 at the 12:33-mark of the first half, baskets by sophomore John Korte (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) and Haines rebuilt the lead to 19-14.
 
The Pioneers controlled the final 10 minutes of the first half. Glenville State out-scored Wheeling 24 to 11 down the stretch and limited the Cardinals to 4-of-15 shooting to close out the first half with a 38-30 advantage.
 
A layup by Allen three minutes into the second half had Wheeling within five at 44-39. 
 
Glenville State began to heat up from beyond-the-arc and went on to out-score the Cardinals 36 to 10 over the ensuing nine minutes of the half to open up an 80-49 lead. The Pioneers converted six treys and forced the Cardinals into several turnovers during the run.
 
The Cardinals managed to close the game on an 18-4 run, but the damage had already been done, sending Wheeling to the road loss.
 
Wheeling shot 28 of 58 (48 percent), but were just 5-of-22 (22 percent) from long range. Glenville State was 31 of 79 (39 percent) and 13 of 46 (28 percent) from three-point territory.
 
The Pioneers out-rebounded Wheeling 47 to 36, including 22 offensive rebounds that led to 24 second-chance Glenville State points.
 
Both John Williams and Nick Edwards recorded double doubles for Glenville State. Williams had 22 points and 13 rebounds (six offensive), while Edwards posted totals of 18 and 11 to lead the Pioneers to the win.
 
The Cardinals return to the McDonough Center on Saturday, January 23 to host Concord at 4:30 p.m.
