WHEELING, W.Va. (June 7) - Wheeling University Head Men's Basketball Coach Will Ryan has resigned to accept the same position at NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Sunday evening.
Ryan, a Wisconsin native and the son of legendary former University of Wisconsin Head Coach Bo Ryan, compiled a 14-13 overall record in his lone season at Wheeling. After being picked to finish in last place in the 12-team league, his team went 11-11 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play and earned the No. 5 seed in the MEC Tournament.
"I would personally like to thank President Ginny Favede, Acting Athletic Director
Carrie Hanna and the late Rudy Yovich for believing in me and giving me the wonderful opportunity to coach the Men's Basketball Team at Wheeling University for the 2019-2020 season," Ryan said. "I am forever grateful to Wheeling University, the city of Wheeling and most importantly the great group of young men I had the pleasure of coaching. The entire athletic department welcomed my family with open arms and we will have lasting memories of our time here."
"I would also like to thank my two Graduate Assistants Nathan Hendel and
Evan Morrissey for their hard work and dedication."
"Coach Ryan is an extraordinary man and a brilliant coach," said Wheeling University President Ginny R. Favede. "It has been a true pleasure to have had Will, Emily and their boys be a part of the Wheeling University family. UW-Green Bay is blessed to have Coach Ryan taking the reins of their men's basketball team. The Ryan's will all be greatly missed. We wish them all the very best."
A national search for a new Wheeling head men's basketball coach will begin immediately.
