Cardinals split two games on final day in Florida

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. (March 6) – The Wheeling University softball team picked up a split on its final day in Florida Friday. The Cardinals fell to Holy Family 6-3, before concluding their time in the Sunshine State with a 7-3 win over Stonehill at the Auburndale Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Holy Family
  • The Cardinals left nine on base in their 6-3 loss to open play on Friday.
  • Holy Family jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a home run in the first inning.
  • Wheeling threatened in both the third inning with the bases loaded and one out, but were unable to bring anyone across.
  • Holy Family made it a 5-0 game with a run in the fifth and two more in the top half of the sixth inning.
  • The Cardinals broke through in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on a pair of hits, including a RBI-double from junior Heather Pinney (North Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) to make the score 5-2.
  • Holy Family recouped one run in the seventh to rebuild its lead to 6-2. 
  • The Cardinals added one more run to their total in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to get any closer.
GAME NOTES
  • Sophomore pitcher Madison Macy (Metamora, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) was tagged with the loss. Macy (3-3) went all seven innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits with a season-high six strikeouts.
  • Both Pinney and freshman Autumn Oehlstrom (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) posted two hits, while sophomore Gina Fogle (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) finished with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Stonehill
  • Wheeling used a pair of three-run innings to defeat Stonehill in its final game in Florida.
  • The Cardinals got off to a fast start against the Skyhawks. The first two batters of the game reached and senior Brianna Grimes (Mason, Ohio/Mason) sent a ball over the left field fence to give Wheeling a 3-0 lead.
  • Stonehill came right back with a three spot in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game up.
  • The game remained tied heading into the fourth inning, before Wheeling plated three more runs to take a 6-3 lead.
  • Grimes connected on a RBI base-hit, while both Pinney and freshman Alisa Shelt (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) delivered sacrifice flies to give the Cards a three-run cushion.
  • Shelt came through again in the top of the sixth inning with a RBI-single to score Pinney and extend the lead to 7-3.
GAME NOTES
  • Freshman pitcher Abby Bumbico (Martins Ferry, Ohio/Martins Ferry) picked up the win in the circle. She tossed a complete game and yielded just three runs on five hits with four strikeouts to improve to 2-2 this season.
  • Grimes led the offense with three hits, including a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Shelt added two hits and two RBIs, while sophomore Taylor Hradek (Perry, Ohio/Perry) finished the game with three hits and two runs scored.
UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals will head back north and enter Mountain East Conference (MEC) play when they travel to Ohio to take on Urbana and Notre Dame.
  • Wheeling will face Urbana on Saturday, March 14 for a twinbill at 2 p.m., and wrap up the weekend trip in South Euclid, Ohio at Notre Dame the following day.
