Cardinals take three out of four at Paine

AUGUSTA, Ga. (March 9) – The Wheeling University baseball team took three out of four against Paine College Sunday and Monday afternoons in non-conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 1
  • Senior Luis Dominguez (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) drove in two runs and a bases clearing double by sophomore Lucas Rawlins (Pickerington, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) broke the game open in a 5-1 win Sunday.
  • Dominguez plated the first run on a fielder's choice in the first and added to the Cardinal lead when he reached on an error with the bases loaded.
  • Two batters later Rawlins made the score 5-0 when he cleared the bases on a double.
  • Paine managed to break up the shutout with a RBI-groundout in the seventh, but starting pitcher Josh Bell (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) recovered to strike out the final batter to end the game.
GAME NOTES
  • Bell (2-1) went the distance and yielded just one run (unearned) on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts in the win.
  • Junior Connor Watt (Roanoke, Va./Glenvar) was the top hitter with two hits and two runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 2
  • Wheeling kept things going on Sunday with an 8-3 win to end the day.
  • The Cardinals struck for four runs in the top of the first inning on four hits, including a two-RBI single by Dominguez.
  • Paine responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but starting pitcher Tanner Evans (Bergholz, Ohio/Edison Local) managed to strand the tying-run at third base.
  • Wheeling kept the offense rolling in the second inning when junior Chris Iazzetta (Clinton, N.J./IMG Academy) smacked a two-run home run to make the score 6-3.
  • The Cardinals added two more runs in separate innings to extend the lead to 8-3 and give Evans more than enough run support for the win.
GAME NOTES
  • Evans improved to 3-1 on the season after allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
  • Iazzetta went 3-for-4 in the game with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Dominguez and junior Jack Skantze (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) each finished with two hits, while Dominguez drove home two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 3
  • In a game slated for seven innings, Paine came away with a 4-3 walk-off win in the ninth inning to pick up a win against the Cardinals.
  • Paine got on the board with three runs in the third inning with the help of a pair of walks and a hit batter to take the lead.
  • Wheeling answered right back in the top of the fourth with a three-run inning that was aided by two errors.
  • Sophomore Jacob Murray (Beallsville, Ohio/Linsly) tripled in a run and scored on an error to make the score 3-2, before a second error plated the game-tying run.
  • The Cardinals had a chance in the seventh and the ninth to secure the go-ahead run when they pushed runners into scoring position, but could not come up with the clutch hit.
  • Paine led the ninth off with a single and sacrificed the runner to second on a bunt. Two batter later they got the game-winning single to plate the winning run. 
GAME NOTES
  • Junior Logan Pillars (Rock Falls, Ill./Rock Falls) went seven innings and limited Paine to three runs on three hits with nine strikeouts in a no-decision.
  • Four players finished with hits, including Murray who posted the lone extra-base hit of the game for Wheeling.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 4
  • Wheeling recovered in a big way to close out the series with a 13-2 win Monday afternoon.
  • Paine scored first in the bottom half of the first to make the score 1-0, but a big third inning propelled the Cardinals.
  • Wheeling drew five walks and had a hit batsman to score four runs on zero hits to take a 4-1 lead.
  • Watt extended the lead with a two-RBI single in the fourth, while a RBI-double from junior Joel Moore (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) put the game out of reach at 8-2 in the fifth.
  • The Cardinals tacked on five more insurance runs in the sixth inning, including another double that score three by Moore, to make the score 13-2.
GAME NOTES
  • Second-year Head Coach Ryan Lewicki threw six different pitchers in the game that combined to collectively hold Paine to two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.
  • Six different Cardinals finished with hits, including Moore who posted hits in all three at bats with two doubles and four RBIs.
UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals will head back north and enter Mountain East Conference (MEC) play when they travel Athens, West Virginia on Saturday, March 14 to take on Concord.
  • The doubleheader with the Mountain Lions is slated to start at 1 p.m.
