Women's basketball falls at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. (Feb. 12) –  The Wheeling University's women's basketball team was dealt an 88-51 loss by Concord in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) game  Wednesday evening at the Carter Center. 

The loss brings the Cardinals overall record to 9-14, 8-9 in MEC play. The Mountain Lions improve their MEC record to 11-6, 15-8 overall. 

Sophomore forward Lilly Ritz (Cambridge, Ohio./ Cambridge), who was named the Division II National Player of the Week, posted her 18th double-down of the season. She finished with 13 points, 16 rebounds, and also blocked four shots. Senior guard Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio./ Walnuts Hills) chipped in for 12 points in the loss. 

Concord got off to a fast start and led the the entire first quarter. Consecutive three pointers in the final minute of the period had Wheeling staring at a 12-point deficit, 24-12, after the first quarter.

Concord picked up where it left off in the second and locked down defensively, outscoring the Cardinals 25-9 in the frame to take a big lead heading into the locker rooms. 

The Mountain Lions did not relinquish any ground in the second half and sent Wheeling to its ninth loss in league play this season.

The Cardinals were limited to a season-low in points in a game. Wheeling finished the night shooting 20-of-63 (32 percent), compared to the 32-of-58 (55 percent) showing by Concord.

The Mountain Lions were led by junior forward Riley Fitzwater's 23-point, 17-rebound performance. Fitzwater is the Division II leader in field-goal percentage (68.6 percent) this season.

The Cardinals picked up a 64-58 win over Concord earlier this season on January 11 at the McDonough Center.

Wheeling will return home on Saturday, February 15 to square off with league-leading Glenville State.  Tip-off will be at 2 p.m. inside the McDonough Center.
