ATHENS, W.Va. (Feb. 12) – The Cardinals could not overcome the hot shooting of Concord in a 101-75 loss at the Carter Center Wednesday night.
The Wheeling University men's basketball team has its three-game winning-streak snapped and drops to 12-9 overall, 9-8 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) standings. Meanwhile, the Mountain Lions pick up a much needed conference win to improve to 5-12 in league play, 7-15 overall.
Junior guard
Jordan Reid (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) led the Cardinals with 18 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore forward
Emmanuel Ansong (Bordentown, N.J./Canterbury School) tallied 17 points and seven boards. Both junior guard
Jarett Haines (Bronx, N.Y./New Rochelle) and sophomore guard
Jay Gentry (Milwaukee, Wisc./Brown Deer) chipped in 11 points in the loss.
Concord led from wire-to-wire in the game. The Mountain Lions converted 9-of-13 from the field, including five three pointers, to open up a 28-8 lead 10 minutes into the game. Wheeling managed to narrow the gap to 45-32 heading into halftime and kept Concord off of the scoreboard over the final two minutes of the first half.
Ansong buried a trey to open the second half to get the deficit down to 10, 45-35, but the Cardinals never got any closer. Concord continued to shoot the ball well in the second half and led by as many as 36 in the second half to cruise to snap Wheeling's winning streak.
The Mountain Lions were 37-of-55 (67 percent) for the game, including 13-of-20 (65 percent) from long range. After shooting 15-of-25 (60 percent) in the first half, Concord shot 22-of-30 (73 percent) in the second stanza.
Wheeling ended the night shooting 27-of-68 (40 percent) from the field.
Six Mountain Lions finished in double figures, including David Mulumba, who posted 20 points and was a perfect 8-for-8 with four threes and eight rebounds.
The Cardinals will look to get back on track on Saturday, February 15 when it hosts Glenville State (13-10, 10-7 MEC) in an important league contest around 4 p.m.
