No. 13 Volleyball collects two wins on final day at UWF Invitational

PENSACOLA, Fla. (Sept. 7) – The No. 13 Wheeling University volleyball team earned a pair of wins on the final day of the West Florida Springhill Suites Invitational. The Cardinals swept Spring Hill 3-0, before closing the trip with a 3-1 win over host- and #24 West Florida.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. Spring Hill
  • The Cardinals rallied from an early deficit to take the first set 25-21.
  • Wheeling dominated the second set, including a string of eight-straight points, to win 25-12.
  • The Cards completed the sweep of Spring Hill in the third set with a huge rally.
  • Wheeling trailed 18-13, before rolling off six-straight points to take the lead.
  • The Cardinals finished things off at 25-23 with a kill by senior Haley Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) to seal the win.
TEAM LEADERS
  • Kramer led the way with 13 kills and five blocks.
  • Junior Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center) matched Kramer with 13 kills and added 12 digs and four blocks for a double-double.
  • Junior Breanna Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) chipped in 12 kills in the win.
  • Senior Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) tossed around 42 assists and added 16 digs for a double-double.
  • Junior Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) finished with 27 digs.
MATCH NOTES
  • Wheeling finished with 11 blocks in the match, including five from both Haley Kramer and sophomore Allonda Watkins (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood)
  • The Cardinals hit .378 (14 kills, zero errors, 37 attacks) in the second set and limited Spring Hill to a negative-0.75 percentage (8 kills, 11 errors, 40 attacks).
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. No. 24 West Florida
  • The Cardinals held leads of 16-10 and 20-14, before holding off the Argonauts at 25-20 in the first set.
  • Wheeling held a 12-4 lead in the second set, but West Florida rebounded to take the set at 25-22.
  • The Cardinals rebounded with a big win in the third set. WU led 19-8, before closing out a 25-16 win.
  • Wheeling led 11-8 in the fourth set before making its run for the win.
  • The Cardinals took six of the next eight points and eventually clinched the win at 25-18.
TEAM LEADERS
  • Meyer paced Wheeling with 20 kills, 20 digs, and four blocks.
  • Breanna Kramer chipped in 16 kills.
  • Sylvester finished with 47 assists and 16 digs.
  • Francis was the top defensive player with 26 digs.
MATCH NOTES
  • The Cardinals finished with 11 blocks, including eight from Watkins.
  • Wheeling limited West Florida to a negative-hitting percentage in the final two sets and forced 34 attack errors in the match.

  • Wheeling travels to Minnesota next weekend for the St. Cloud State Invitational.
  • The Cardinals will play four matches over two days, including two on Friday, September 13.
