Wheeling drops league opener to Fairmont State

WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 18) - The Wheeling University women's soccer team was defeated by Fairmont State 6-0 in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest Wednesday evening at Bishop Schmitt Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fairmont State struck early in the third-minute of the match when Ari Christiansen chipped a cross over the Wheeling keeper to make the score 1-0.
  • The Falcons added a second goal four minutes later and scored again in the 31st-minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
  • The Cardinals were unable to mount a comeback in the second half and were limited to five shot attempts in the second half.
MATCH NOTES
  • Senior goalkeeper Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) posted 10 saves in the loss.
  • Fairmont State used its depth to overwhelm the Cardinals in the offensive zone. The Falcons held over 60 percent of the final possession total.
