Week 3 Preview: Wheeling vs. Urbana

WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 18) – The Wheeling University football team will play the first home night game in program-history when it hosts Urbana in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest on Thursday, September 19 with a 7 p.m. kickoff from Bishop Schmitt Field.

WHEELING WEEK IN REVIEW: Fairmont State scored on the second play of the game and never looked back in Wheeling's 53-10 setback last Thursday night. The Falcons finished with 590 yards of total offense, compared to the 239 posted by the Cardinals.

URBANA WEEK IN REVIEW: Blue Knight running back W.R. Sanders, Jr. tied the school-record with four touchdowns to help Urbana rally for a 28-20 win against Charleston. UC led 20-7 in the second quarter, before Urbana rolled off the game's final 21 points, all on Sanders touchdown runs.

URBANA HEAD COACH: Head Coach Tyler Haines is in his fifth season with the Blue Knights and is the second-winningest coach in Urbana's 35-year history of football. Haines was the offensive coordinator at Indiana (Pa.) for two years prior to taking the reins at Urbana.

PROTECT THE QB: The Wheeling offensive line has only allowed one sack through two games, which is tied for second in the MEC. Urbana leads the conference with seven sacks thus far.

OPPOSITE ENDS: Wheeling defensively is allowing a league-worst 550.0 yards per game. Urbana's defense is currently the top unit in the MEC allowing only 241.0 yards per game. 

SECURITY BLANKET: Sophomore wide receiver Ryan LaFollette finished with a game-high eight receptions for 68 yards last week at Fairmont State. LaFollette ranks third in the MEC in both receptions (15) and receiving yards (203).

LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK: Despite only one tackle last week, sophomore linebacker James Reese III still leads the MEC with five tackles for loss and three sacks.

GETTING A SHOT: Sophomore quarterback Tyler Sprouse relieved starter Tucker Strachan late in the second half and was 5-of-10 for 44 yards while making his debut.

PUT AWAY THE LAUNDRY: Wheeling and Urbana are two of the least penalized teams in the MEC. The Cardinals have been flagged 11 times for 100 yards, while Urbana has been called for 10 penalties for 129 yards.

BLUE KNIGHTS IN THE RED ZONE: Urbana is 7-of-8 in the red zone this season with seven touchdowns. The Blue Knights are also a league-best 2-of-4 in red zone defense.

SPECIAL TEAMS SPECIALIST: Sophomore kicker/punter Matthew Greenwood ranks fifth in the MEC with a 34.1 average on 12 punts. He has two of 50 yards or more, including a 56-yard punt against West Liberty. That punt is currently the longest among MEC punters this season.

NEXT UP: The Cardinals will have a few extra days off before they travel to Buckhannon, West Virginia on Saturday, September 28 to take on West Virginia Wesleyan in a MEC contest at 1 p.m.
