Late push not enough in Cardinals' loss to Malone, 3-2

WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 11) – Sophomore Kenadee Burgoyne (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman) scored twice, but it was not enough as the Wheeling University women's soccer team was knocked off 3-2 by Malone in a non-confernce match at Bishop Schmitt Field Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • Wheeling stuck first as Burgoyne's unassisted finish notched her second goal of the season to put the Cardinals up 1-0 nearing the 17th-minute.
  • Malone answered back with the first of three consecutive goals late in the 37th-minute to tie the game up before halftime at 1-1.
  • Malone took the lead with a goal less than 10 minutes into the second half and tallied their another on a ball that looked to be a cross from the near right side, but ended up going in the top corner of the net to put make the score 3-1 late in the second half.
  • Burgoyne found the back of the net again in the 89th-minute, to pull the Cardinals within one goal.
  • The Cardinals made one final push in the closing seconds of the match, but were unable to find the equalizer. 
MATCH NOTES
  • Burgoyne has scored in both games for the Cardinals and now has three for the season. She had zero goals in eight games last season.
  • Senior goalkeeper Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill/Sacred Heart-Griffin) stopped the Pioneers eight times in her first start of the year.
  • Malone out-shot Wheeling 17 to 14 and had 11 shots on target, while Wheeling only had six.
  • Junior Marley Magruder (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) tallied an assist on one of Burgoyne's goals and recorded four shots in the contest.
UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals will travel to Erie, Pennsylvania on Saturday to make-up their contest with Mercyhurst scheduled originally last week, for a kick-off at 7:30 p.m.
