WHEELING, W.Va. (April 7) - Two goals by senior
Kate Calder (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) in the final three minutes helped the Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team knock off Charleston 13-12 in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) game on Sunday afternoon at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The Cardinals improve their record to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the MEC, while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-8 overall, 1-4 in league play.
Calder ended the game with four goals, while sophomore
Megan Mangia (Gahanna, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) also added four goals for the Cardinals. Freshman
Mackenzie Kaderabek(Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) tallied three goals, one assist, and three draw control wins for WJU. Senior
Ally Coggins(Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) added two goals for the Cardinals.
Charleston started the first half off strong, going up 4-1 by the 18-minute mark. Kaderabekthen scored back-to-back goals to bring the Cardinals within one. Two draw control wins by sophomore
Kelly Martyn(Baltimore, Md./The Catholic School) led to two more goals for WJU, both by Mangia, to give the Cards a 5-4 lead. Both teams saw several goals in the next few moments of play, leading to the Cardinals being up 8-7 with two minutes left on the clock. Charleston snuck two goals in during the final minute of play to go up 9-8 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles opened up the second half with a goal from a free-position shot, extending the lead to 10-8 with 26 minutes left in the game. WJU had eight scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net. Calder ended the drought when she fired a shot by the UC goalkeeper off of a pass from sophomore
Paige Orbell(Severn, Md./Old Mill). The Cardinals kept up the pressure, causing a Charleston turnover on the next play and taking several shots from the possession. Coggins eventually tied the game at 10-10 with 16 minutes left on the clock.
An unfortunate turnover by Wheeling Jesuit led to a goal by the Golden Eagles just two minutes later. Orbellwon the following draw control and found Mangiawho scored her fourth goal of the game to tie the game up at 11-11 with 14 minutes to play. Charleston took advantage of a free-position attempt and reclaimed the lead at the 10-minute mark.
A nice play by Calder gave the Cardinals a free position attempt that she capitalized on to tie the game 12-12 with under three minutes left. Obellmade a crucial move on the following draw control, winning the ball and giving WJU a chance to score. Calder found the back of the net for the fourth time, putting Wheeling Jesuit up 13-12 with two minutes to spare. A save by sophomore goalkeeper
Emma Stair (Westminster, Md./Mount De Sales Academy) and a ground ball pickup by Martyn stopped the advances by the Golden Eagles, finishing the game 13-12 in favor of the Cardinals.
Stair finished the game with 11 saves to pick up the win.
Orbelltallied six ground balls, four draw control wins, and three caused turnovers, while Martynand freshman KarliFriend (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Merion) each recorded three caused turnovers as well.
WJU stays home next when it takes on Shepherd in a MEC showdown on Friday, April 12 at 5 p.m.
