Cardinals overcome Charleston, 18-16

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (April 28) - The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team defeated Charleston 18-16 at UC Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the last Mountain East Conference (MEC) matchup of regular season.

The Cardinals improve their record to 11-6 overall, 7-3 in the MEC. Wheeling Jesuit has secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MEC Tournamant and will play No. 2 seed Shepherd on Friday, May 3 at Carl Smith Stadium in Wise, Virginia in a quarterfinal matchup. Game times have not yet been determined.

Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 5-11 overall and 3-7 in league play and clinch a berth into the postseason as the No. 4 seed. They will play top-seed UVa-Wise in the other quarterfinal game.

Senior Ally Coggins (Mt. Airy, Md./Liganore) led WJU with six goals, two ground balls, and one caused turnover. Sophomores Bethany Wallingford (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) and Megan Mangia (Gahanna, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) each contributed three goals for the Cardinals.

Wallingford and Mangia quickly put Wheeling Jesuit up at the start, each scoring within the first two minutes of play. The Golden Eagles answered with a 4-1 run which put them up 4-3 by the 18 minute mark. The Cardinals came back with Mangia scoring her other two goals and Coggins sneaking one by Charleston's goalkeeper as well. With 10 minutes left in the first half, WJU was up 6-4.

By winning 13 draw control wins versus Charleston's six, Wheeling Jesuit was able to make several offensive attacks. Sophomore Paige Orbell (Severn, Md./Old Mill) and freshman Mackenzie Kaderabek (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) each won four of the draw controls.

The Cardinals continued their scoring steak with a 5-3 run to end the first half, 11-7. Two of the goals came from free position attempts by Wallingford and senior Kate Calder (Cincinnatie, Ohio/McAuley), while another two were scored by Coggins. The final goal of the first half was made by senior Taylor Booth (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods) with an assist by Mangia.

Kaderabek scored the opening goal of the first half for WJU, who then held a 12-7 lead for the next six minutes. The Golden Eagles found some momentum and put three balls into the back of the net within two minutes, but the Cardinals countered with a goal of their own. By the 21 minute mark, the Cardinals were only leading 13-10.

WJU found some openings and scored three unanswered goals. With two goals by Orbell and one by Calder, the Cardinals saw a 16-10 lead with 16 minutes left to play. Charleston went on a 5-2 run, coming back withint one (17-16) with three minutes left on the clock. A final goal by Coggins gave the Cardinals breathing room, and a final draw control win by Kaderabek kept the ball on WJU's offensive side. This led to the Cardinals coming away with a victory 18-16 victory over the Golden Eagles.

Kaderabek led the Cardinals with seven draw control wins. She also recorded one goal, one assist, and four ground balls. Wallingford also tallied four ground balls, along with two caused turnovers and three draw control wins. Orbell ended the game with two goals, two ground balls, and five draw control wins. Calder also put two goals on the scoreboard for WJU, plus three draw control wins. 


The Cardinal will travel to Wise, Virginia to play No. 2 seed Shepherd on Friday, May 3 with game-time yet to be determined.
