Baseball knocks off Salem, 6-3

WHEELING, W.Va. (April 24) – The Wheeling Jesuit University baseball team posted a 6-3 win over Salem in a nine-inning non-conference contest Wednesday evening at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex.

The Cardinals improve to 9-29 overall, while the Tigers move to 23-20 this season.

Salem took the first lead of the game in the third inning with two runs. WJU managed to slice the lead in half in the bottom of the inning when freshman Seth Scoville (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Cardinals put two on with one out in the fifth. Scoville came around to score on a RBI fielder's choice by sophomore Brad Trescott (Rootstown, Ohio/Rootstown) to tie the game up at 2-2, before a double by freshman Chardale Folks (Bowie, Md./CH Flowers) gave the Cards a 4-2 lead.

Salem inched back to within one with a run in the sixth inning to make the score 4-3, but Wheeling Jesuit plated two more runs in the bottom of the frame to rebuild its lead. Freshman Bijan Kamalipour (Frisco, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) hit a lead-off home run and Scoville delivered a RBI-single to put WJU ahead 6-3 in the contest.

The Cardinal bullpen did its job over the final three innings. Freshman pitcher Shawn Marcellus (Renfrew, Pa./Butler Area) only yielded a two-out walk in the seventh, while junior pitcher Nick Luciano (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) struck out a pair and worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to shut the door and earn his third save of the season.

Freshman pitcher Zach Rohaley (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief to earn his fourth win of the season. The Cardinals used five pitchers in the mid-week victory.

Kamalipour was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a solo home run. Scoville was also perfect at the dish with three hits, one RBI and two runs scored.

The Cardinals return to Mountain East Conference (MEC) play this weekend when they welcome Urbana for a four-game series beginning on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
