Cardinals knocked off twice by Shepherd

WHEELING, W.Va. (April 13) – The Wheeling Jesuit University baseball team was defeated twice by Shepherd Saturday evening at the JB Chambers Complex.
 
The Cardinals fall to 8-25 overall, 6-12 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC). Meanwhile, the Rams build on their lead in the MEC North and improve to 15-3 in league play, 25-10 overall this season.
 
GAME ONE: Shepherd 6, Wheeling Jesuit 0
Shepherd plated runs in each of the first three innings and held the Cards off of the scoreboard in a 6-0 game one win.
 
Wheeling Jesuit had its best opportunity to score in the fifth inning when in put runners on second and third with one out, but the Rams got a strike out and a fly out to end the threat.
 
The Cardinals scattered two hits in the final two innings, but were unable to produce any runs.
 
Freshman Payton Faris (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) was saddled with the loss. Faris (3-3) went four innings and allowed six runs (five earned) with three strikeouts.
 
GAME TWO: Shepherd 10, Wheeling Jesuit 3
Shepherd hit three home runs in its 10-3 game two win over the Cardinals.
 
The Rams built a 4-0 lead with home runs in the first and fourth innings.
 
The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Hayden Hizer (Paden City, W.Va./Paden City) doubled to deep left field to make the score 4-1, but WJU left runners on second and third to end the inning. 
 
Shepherd tacked on two more in the sixth on a well-admired two-run home run that made the score 6-1.
 
Hizer delivered his second RBI of the game in the sixth on a ground out that made the score 6-2, but the Cardinals were unable to close the gap any further.
 
The Cardinals and Rams will conclude their series tomorrow, Sunday, April 14 at the JB Chambers Complex at 1 p.m.
