Wheeling Jesuit swept at Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (April 1) - The Wheeling Jesuit University softball team was dealt a pair of losses at Fairmont State Monday afternoon. The Cardinals lost 5-0 in the opener, before dropping an 11-2 game in five innings to conclude the day.

WJU drops to 6-24 overall, 3-9 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC). Meanwhile, the Falcons improve to 9-3 in the MEC, 15-11 overall this season.

GAME ONE: Fairmont State 5, Wheeling Jesuit 0
The Cardinals had runners on base, but were unable to bring anyone to the plate in their game one loss.

Fairmont State led 2-0 after four innings. The Cardinals had one of their better opportunities to score in the fifth inning when they had runners on first and second with two outs, but the Falcons got out of the jam unscathed.

FSU added three more runs in the sixth inning and retired Wheeling Jesuit in order in the seventh to seal the win.

Freshman pitcher Madison Macy (Metamora, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) was charged with five runs on seven hits in the loss.

Sophomore outfielder Alana York (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) led the offense with two hits in the game.

GAME TWO: Fairmont State 11, Wheeling Jesuit 2 (Final/5 Innings)
Fairmont State exploded for nine runs on nine hits in the third inning to secure the run-rule shortened win in game two.

The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning and scored their first run of the day on a RBI-ground out by senior Molly Welsh (Bethel Park, Pa./OLSH), but FSU limited the damage to that one run and still led 11-1 after four innings.

WJU managed to plate a second run in the fifth inning, but a game-ending double play on two separate run downs closed out the win for the Falcons.

Welsh and senior Taylor DiPerna (Coraopolis, Pa./OLSH) posted identical two-hit, one-RBI lines in the game, while freshman Taylor Hradek (Perry, Ohio/Perry) finished with two hits.

The Cardinals are on the road on Wednesday, April 3 for another MEC doubleheader when they travel up the hill to West Liberty for games at 3 and 5 p.m.
