CHARLESTON, W.Va. (March 24) – The Wheeling Jesuit University softball team was defeated twice in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) doubleheader at Charleston on Sunday. The Cardinals were shutout 3-0 in the first game, before a run scored late in the second game resulted in a 3-2 win for the Golden Eagles.
WJU falls to 6-20 overall, 3-5 in the MEC with the pair of losses. UC improves to 3-5 in league play, 10-13 on the season with the pair of wins.
GAME ONE: Charleston 3, Wheeling Jesuit 0
Wheeling Jesuit was held scoreless in the opening game of the doubleheader due to a strong performance by Charleston's starting pitcher.
The Golden Eagles picked up two runs in the first and fifth innings off RBI-singles. They scored a third run in the sixth inning by reaching home on an error.
Charleston's Carly Turner was awarded the win for only giving up three hits in a complete-game shutout.
Freshman shortstop Taylor Hradek (Perry, Ohio/Perry) recorded five assists and three putouts from the middle of the infield.
GAME TWO: Charleston 3, Wheeling Jesuit 2
The later game of the series was decided by a crucial run scored by Charleston in the sixth inning.
The Golden Eagles established the first lead of the game when they went to bat in the bottom of the second inning. A bunt-single that allowed a base runner to score from third base and an RBI-single with two outs put UC up 2-0.
The Cardinals responded quickly in the top of the third inning by tying the game at 2-2. With base runners on second and third base, freshman Kelsey Barron (La Salle, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) placed a bunt perfectly to bring a run home from third while she reached base safely. Senior Molly Welsh (Bethel Park, Pa./OLSH) advanced to third base on that play and was able to touch home plate after an error was committed during the next at bat.
Charleston scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a RBI-single and kept Wheeling Jesuit off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning.
Both Barron and senior Jackie Cramer (Indian Head, Pa./Connellsville) had multi-hit performances.
Barron (4-6) took the loss in the circle after yielding three runs (one earned) on six hits over six innings of work.
Freshman Gina Fogle (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) was a vacuum at third base, tallying six assists from the corner of the infield.
WJU returns to the JB Chambers Complex for a non-conference doubleheader versus Indiana (Pa.) on Tuesday, March 26. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
