GREENSBURG, Pa. (March 19) – The Wheeling Jesuit University softball team came up short on both sides of a non-conference doubleheader at Seton Hill on Tuesday. The Cardinals fell 8-3 in the first game due to a late rally by the Griffins. WJU was held hitless in the second game, but managed to manufacture a run in a 3-1 loss.
Wheeling Jesuit drops to 6-16 overall, while, the Griffins climb to 13-7 on the season with four wins against the Cardinals.
GAME ONE: Seton Hill 8, Wheeling Jesuit 3
The first game of the series was scoreless until the fifth inning when the Cardinals broke through. With a runner on base in the top of the fifth inning, senior Molly Welsh (Bethel Park, Pa./OLSH) belted a homerun over the right field fence to put Wheeling Jesuit up 2-0.
The Griffins responded with four runs in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-2 lead.
WJU was able to pull one run back in the seventh when Welsh scored from third base on a throwing error from center field, but the rally ended there.
Welsh collected two hits with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Seton Hill's Devyn Terry earned the win by pitching a complete game and only giving up two earned runs.
GAME TWO: Seton Hill 3, Wheeling Jesuit 1
The second game of the series stayed deadlocked until the bottom of the sixth inning when SHU picked up two runs.
Welsh reached base on an error in the top of the first inning and was able to advance to third base on a wild pitch. She scored by sneaking home while her teammate was caught in a pickle between second and first base.

Freshman pitcher Madison Macy (Metamora, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) was tabbed with the loss despite a respectable outing in the circle. She gave up five hits and walked one batter over six innings of work.
Seton Hill's Skyla Greco earned the win by holding the Cardinals without a hit throughout the ballgame.
The Cardinals return to league play for their next games at West Virginia State on Saturday, March 23. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
