Women's lacrosse overcomes Lake Erie, 11-9

WHEELING, W.Va. (March 17) - The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team triumphed over Lake Erie 11-9 in the non-conference game on Sunday afternoon.

The win improves the Cardinals record to 3-3, while Lake Erie falls to 2-3 overall.

Junior Hayley Holmquist (Temecula, Calif./Temecula) and sophomore Megan Mangia (Gahanna, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) led the Cardinals with three goals apiece. Freshman Mackenzie Kaderabek (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) helped the team by adding two goals and five draw control wins.

The Cardinals saw sophomore Paige Orbell (Severn, Md./Old Mill) win her 100th draw control during the game. She recorded two draw controls along with a goal and four ground balls.

The Storm hit first, going up one just two minutes into the game. WJU quickly answered with two goals, one from a free position. The teams struggled to find the net until Lake Erie put one between the posts at the 18-minute mark. After several shots on goal, the Cardinals found some footing. Holmquist fired one into the back of the net off of an assist by senior Ally Coggins (Mt. Airy, Md./Liganore).

LEC tied the game again with seven minutes left to go in the first half, but the Cardinals were able to sneak two more in before halftime. The Storm won seven draw controls compared to Wheeling Jesuit's three, giving them opportunities to be on the offensive. A late shot by the Storm brought them closer, but WJU kept a 5-4 lead going into the second half.

Lake Erie's Anna Spin scored one of her five goals immediately starting the second half. The Cardinals then went on a 4-1 run, putting them up 9-6 with 17 minutes left in the game. The Storm came back to score three in a row, tying the game 9-9 at the six minute mark. Seven draw control wins and 11 ground balls gave WJU several offensive possessions.

A save by sophomore Emma Stair (Westminster, Md./Mount De Sales Academy) gave the Cardinals the ball with under a minute to play. Sophomore Bethany Wallingford (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) sent the ball to Kaderabek right in front of the net, enabling her to get a goal. Mangia added a final goal for the Cardinals, finishing the game 11-9.

Coggins and Wallingford each scored a goal for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals travel to Shepherd to play in their first Mountain East Conference matchup on March 22 at 4 p.m.
