WHEELING, W.Va. (March 16) – The Wheeling Jesuit University softball team picked up a win and a loss in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) doubleheader against Notre Dame (Ohio) on a chilly Saturday afternoon at the JB Chambers Complex. The Falcons edged out the first game 3-2 prior to a 10-1 thumping by the Cardinals in game two.
WJU moves to 4-14 overall, 1-1 in the MEC. Meanwhile, NDC slides to 5-7 overall, 1-1 in league play.
GAME ONE: Notre Dame 3, Wheeling Jesuit 2
Wheeling Jesuit picked up runs in the first and seventh innings, but couldn't overcome the lead established by Notre Dame in the innings in between.
Senior Molly Welsh (Bethel Park, Pa./OLSH) led off for the Cardinals in the bottom of the first with a solo homer over the left field fence.
The Falcons responded in the top of the third with a two-RBI line drive single into center. They added a crucial third run to their tally in the top of the sixth when a single through the left side of the infield allowed a baserunner to score.
Junior Crystal Carrillo (Los Angeles, Calif./Warren) beat out a throw from the shortstop to get a runner across home plate in the bottom of the seventh. WJU could not finish the late rally, however, leaving the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Welsh's lead-off home run was her second of the season.
GAME TWO: Wheeling Jesuit 10, Notre Dame 1 (F/5)
A five-run third inning and a four-run fourth inning guided the Cardinals to their first conference win of the year.
Freshman Kelsey Barron (La Salle, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) threw a complete game, allowing two hits and one run in five innings pitched. Senior first baseman Courtney Rogers (Hurricane, W.Va./Hurricane) went two-for-three with a home run, two runs scored and a season-high four RBIs.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom first put Wheeling Jesuit up 1-0. Notre Dame loaded the bases in the top of the third and looked threatening, but could only get one run across to tie the game.
The bottom of the third saw three consecutive bombs from WJU that gave the Cardinals a 6-1 lead over NDC.
Even after a pitching change, Wheeling Jesuit continued its hitting clinic in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 10-1.
Barron kept the Falcons off the scoreboard in the subsequent inning to make the game final after five innings.
The Cardinals return to the diamond tomorrow, Sunday, March 17 for a doubleheader against Urbana at 12 p.m.
