ATHENS, W.Va. (Feb. 7) – The Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team grabbed the lead in the first quarter, but were ultimately out-shot by Concord in a 68-51 loss at the home of the Mountain Lions.
The Cardinals fall to 3-18 overall, 2-8 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) with the loss. The Mountain Lions improve to 12-3 in MEC play, 17-4 overall with the win.
Junior guard Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) had a team-high 18 points, while freshman forward Peyton McCord (Mt. Vernon, Ohio/Mt. Vernon) nearly reached the double-double mark with a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Burton and McCord both tallied six points in the first quarter to help Wheeling Jesuit gain a 14-12 advantage at the end of the opening frame.
The second quarter went in favor of Concord. The hosts converted all four of its attempts from three-point range and departed the court at halftime with a 36-23 lead.
The Cardinals opened the third quarter with a 9-3 run that brought them back to within seven points of Concord. The Mountain Lions kept their distance and went on to finish the game with a double-digit win.
Concord's head coach Kenny Osborne reached 250 career wins with the victory. Senior guard Andreanna Pool scored a game-high 23 points to assist him in hitting that milestone.
Wheeling Jesuit will head to the campus of UVa-Wise on Saturday, February 9 for another MEC clash. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
