Cardinals rally past Concord, 98-89

ATHENS, W.Va. (Feb. 7) - The Wheeling Jesuit University men's basketball team surged past Concord for a 98-89 win Thursday night in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) game.

The win improves the Cardinals to 4-17 overall, 3-12 in the MEC this season. Meanwhile, the Mountain Lions drop to 9-6 in league play, 14-7 overall.

Freshman forward DeAndre Robinson (Monroeville, Ala./Monroe County) registered a double-double with season-highs of 33 points and 18 rebounds. Robinson, who scored 25 points in the second half, finished the game 10 of 14 from the field, made all four of his three-point attempts, and converted all nine of his free throw tries.

Freshman guard Franck Kamgain (Kansas City, Mo./DME Sports Academy) also established a season-high with 31 points and defensively played a huge role in limiting MEC leading scorer Tommy Bolte (29.7 ppg.) to 22 points on 7-of-19 shooting (37 percent).

Wheeling Jesuit opened up a 10-5 lead four minutes into the game on a trey by freshman guard Steve Cannady (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Palotti). Concord answered with 17-straight points to open up a 22-10 lead with 12:05 left in the first half. The Mountain Lions added to its lead and eventually built their advantage to as many as 18, before taking a 49-37 lead into halftime.

The Cardinals came out of the locker room strong with a 15-5 run to draw back within two, 54-52, with 15:34 to play in the game. Concord maintained a narrow advantage over the next six minutes and re-built its lead to eight, 71-63, with just under 10 minutes left on the clock.

The Mountain Lions led 81-72 with 6:22 remaining in regulation when the Cardinals began to make their move. Wheeling Jesuit went on a 13-2 run to take its first-lead since the early stages of the game at 85-83 with 1:53 left to play. A pair of Bolte free throws tied the game back up, before consecutive three pointers by Kamgain gave the Cards a 91-87 lead with 36 seconds on the clock.

Bolte once again drained two from the charity stripe to draw back within two, 91-89, but the Cardinals knocked down seven of eight free-throw attempts in the closing seconds on its end of the court to seal the victory.

Wheeling Jesuit out-scored Concord 61-40 in the second half and shot 20 of 34 (59 percent) from the field during the final 20 minutes. The Mountain Lions were limited to 10 of 34 (29 percent) shooting in the second half.

The Cardinals, who entered the night with the second-worst free-throw percentage in the MEC (68 percent), converted 20 of 22 attempts at the stripe.

Four Mountain Lions scored in double-figures, led by guard Jair Rodgers' game-high 34 points.

Wheeling Jesuit will continue its road trip with a visit to UVa-Wise on Saturday, February 9 for a tip at 4 p.m.
