WHEELING, W.Va. (Feb. 24) – The Wheeling Jesuit University women's lacrosse team was defeated by Findlay 21-8 on a windy Sunday afternoon at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The Cardinals drop to 0-2 overall with the loss. The Oilers improve to 1-2 this season with the win.
Freshman Mackenzie Kaderabek (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) scored a season-high four goals and dished out an assist. Senior Ally Coggins (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) also recorded a season-high with four assists. Sophomore Paige Orbell (Severn, Md./Old Mill) was active throughout the match, winning 10 draw controls and snatching up six ground balls.
Findlay opened the scoring in the first half with six unanswered goals. Kaderabek put Wheeling Jesuit on the scoresheet with 21:29 remaining in the opening half thanks to an assist by Coggins. The Cardinals proceeded to go on a 5-3 run and were able to cut the deficit to four goals, 9-5. The Oilers did not allow Wheeling Jesuit to get any closer to taking the lead for the rest of the game.
The Cardinals won 21 draw controls compared to 10 draw controls won by the Oilers. Findlay's goalkeepers came up with 10 saves to keep Wheeling Jesuit from mounting a comeback.
Findlay's Ciara Burud led the charge for the Oilers, scoring eight goals off of nine shots.
The Cardinals will remain at home for another non-conference contest against Northern Michigan on Wednesday, March 6 at 2 p.m.
