Cardinals dealt overtime loss by Davis & Elkins, 4-3

WHEELING, W.Va. (Nov. 2) - The Wheeling University women's soccer team erased a three-goal deficit, but came up short in a 4-3 overtime loss to Davis & Elkins Saturday evening in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Davis & Elkins notched the first goal of the match in the 8th-minute to give the Senators a lead that held for the remainder of the half. 
  • The second half began with back-to-back goals for the Senators that pushed their lead to three in the 58th minute. 
  • Wheeling answered back with a goal of their own in the 66th-minute when freshmen Shiann Thomas (Saxonburg, Pa./ Knoch) scored her second-career goal to cut the deficit to two. 
  • Wheeling wasn't finished yet. Senior Micah Miller (Wyommissing, Pa./ Wyomissing Area) drew a penalty in the box to get the penalty-kick opportunity. Miller finished off the penalty to slice the Wheeling deficit to one in the 73rd minute. 
  • Minutes later a Davis & Elkins player slipped on the field and allowed junior Elexis Brown (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) to collect the ball near mid field.
  • Brown sent the ball up field to sophomore Braedynn Porter (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/ Mineral Ridge), who beat the D&E keeper to the far side of the net to tie the match up at 3-3 in the 79th-minute.
  • Davis & Elkins had a golden opportunity to end the match in regulation when they were granted a penalty-kick with 37 seconds left, but the attempt went above the cross-bar and sent the match into overtime.
  • Davis & Elkins scored the golden goal with just 32 seconds left in the first overtime period to secure the win and deny the Cardinals the come-from-behind win.  

MATCH NOTES

  • Senior goalkeeper Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./ Sacred Heart-Griffin) finished with four saves in the match. 
  • Porter led the team with eight shots in the match, with four shots on-goal.
  • Miller led the team with three points. She assisted on Thomas' goal that got the Cardinals going in the 66th-minute.
  • Wheeling finished with a 21-to-15 advantage in shots.
