Week 9 Preview: Wheeling at Glenville State

WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 31) - Wheeling University travels to Glenville State on Saturday, November 2 for a Mountain East Conference (MEC) football game. Kick-off is set for 12 p.m.

WHEELING WEEK IN REVIEW: The Cardinals allowed 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter of a 42-12 loss to Frostburg State. The Bobcats converted five Wheeling turnovers into 28 points, including a pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns. Sy Alli IV (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy)tallied 16 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

GLENVILLE STATE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Pioneers scored the game's first points, but Charleston scored 42-unanswered to earn a 42-3 win. Glenville State's Tim Heltzel threw for 141 yards on 18-of-42 passing and ran for 37 yards in the loss. Running back Mario Pender picked up only 26 yards on the ground on nine carries.

GLENVILLE STATE HEAD COACH: Head Coach Mike Keller is in his first season with the Pioneers. Keller has posted a 55-39 record as head coach at Glenville State, Lenoir-Rhyne, California (Pa.) and Concord. He spent the 2018 season as offensive coordinator at West Liberty and was the offensive coordinator on a pair of national semifinalist teams at California in 2007 and 2008.

TURNOVER BATTLE: Glenville State features the best turnover margin in the MEC (+12) and has a league-high 16 interceptions this season. Wheeling is tied for last in the conference in turnover margin (-10) and has thrown a league-high 16 interceptions. Pioneer corner back Delonte Hood leads the MEC with seven INTs.

NO PUNTING ALLOWED: Wheeling and Glenville State have converted more fourth down attempts than anyone in the MEC. The Cardinals enter the game 12 of 25 (48 percent) on fourth down, while Glenville State is 17 of 33 (51.5 percent).

RECEPTION LEADER: Wide receiver Ryan LaFollette (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central)continues to be a reliable target in the passing game. He posted his fifth game with eight or more receptions against Frostburg State with eight catches for 83 yards. He currently ranks fifth in Division II with 7.9 receptions per game.

BEHIND THE LINE: Wheeling recorded five tackles for loss last week against Frostburg State, including a pair of sacks, which was the most since they had 10 in the season-opener versus West Liberty.

SCHOOL RECORDS: Wheeling running back Sy Alli IV (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy) established season-highs with 99 yards on 16 attempts versus Frostburg State. His 34-yard touchdown rush in the first quarter was the longest rush this season (and in program history) by a Cardinal.

WHITE OUT: Wheeling corner back Rich White III (Cleveland, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edwards) ranks 30th nationally with 1.4 passes defended per game and 11th with 6.0 solo tackles per game.

NEXT UP: The Cardinals will play its home finale next Saturday, November 9 when they host West Virginia State for a noon kick-off at Bishop Schmitt Field.
