Minuzzi goal lifts Cards past West Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (Sept. 29) - A goal in the 62nd-minute by senior Martin Minuzzi (Cardoba, Argentina/Nazerath) was the difference in the Cardinals 1-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match Saturday evening.

The win improves the Wheeling Jesuit University men's soccer team to 5-2 in league play, 6-2-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Bobcats drop to 2-6-2 overall, 2-6 in the MEC.

Shots were even through the opening half of the game, but all four of the Cardinals' shots were on goal and they held a 6-to-1 edge in corner kicks awarded.

The Cardinals broke through in the second half when Minuzzi put the ball into the back of the net off of a pass from sophomore McKinley Fodness (Issaquah, Wash./Skyline) to make the score 1-0.

West Virginia Wesleyan had a trio of scoring opportunities, including a pair of shots in the final 10 minutes that were stopped by freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Bosmyr (Joenkoeping, Sweeden/Erik Dalhlbergs) to preserve the clean sheet.

Bosmyr made four saves in the match to earn his second shutout of the season.

The Bobcats held the edge in shots, 11-to-7, despite WJU's 10-to-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Minuzzi now ranks second in the MEC in both goals (6) and points (14).

The Cardinals return home on Sunday, October 7 when they welcome Concord for a MEC match at 4 p.m.
