Cardinals Fall Hit Shy, Yellow Jackets Edge MEC Title in 9 Innings

SALEM, Va. – The title game lived up to the billing for a championship contest. After missing the key hit for the seventh time of the day, Wheeling Jesuit missed working out of two-on and no-out situation until West Virginia State's Brittany Allison lofted a single just between the short stop and left fielder to plate the game's only run in the home ninth frame for a 1-0 win in the Mountain East Conference Championship.

The Cardinals (27-24) left runners on base in seven inning for a total of 11 base runners. Mallory Chapman pitched brilliantly again, including retiring the first 12 West Virginia State (34-21) hitters of the game, where she allowed only five hits, no earned runs and struck out seven over 8.2 innings of work.

For the second time in two days, WJU outhit West Virginia State with a 10-5 margin in the title tilt. Chapman, Cassie Holstein, Jackie Cramer and Alaina York each went 2 for 4. Courtney Rogers and Victoria Scott accounted for the other two singles.

It was WJU's first appearance in the MEC Softball Tournament Championship game in the league's five-year history. Chapman, Holstein and Brianna Grimes were all named to the MEC All-Tournament Team.

The Cardinals started quickly in the top of the first. After Holstein reached on an error, Chapman lined a one-out single. The two runners swiped second and third, before Scott drew a two-out walk. As would be the theme, WJU left the bases loaded.

In the second frame, WJU saw Cramer and Holstein single, but were both left stranded.

After single runners left in the third and fifth, Cramer and York singled and both advanced on a Holstein sac bunt. West Virginia State enticed outs in the next two WJU hitters to keep it scoreless.

In the top of the ninth, York singled up the middle with one out. The freshman advanced to second on a ground out, but could not advance with the final out being recorded.

Heading to the bottom of the ninth, the Yellow Jackets led off with a single and then a Cardinal error put runners on second and third with no outs. Chapman fanned the next hitter and enticed a grounder back to her for out number two. Allison fell behind in the count, but was able to get enough of a Chapman offering for the shallow left field game-winning hit.
