Bell Opening 3-Hit Shutout, Cardinals Send Off Four Solid Seniors

WHEELING, W.Va. – The best Cardinals pitching performance of the spring highlighted the season finale twinbill. Wheeling Jesuit received a Josh Bell three-hit shutout in the Sunday opener, 6-0, before West Liberty used three home runs for an 8-2 late victory.

His WJU (8-34/7-25 Mountain East Conference North) offense gave him six runs in the first three innings to work with to start the game. Bell allowed only a two-out, first-inning single, but he faced the minimum through the first 4.1 innings. The sophomore gave up two hits in the fifth, but no more for his first collegiate shutout, a three-hitter, in game one.

The Cardinals' Hayden Hizer doubled home Adam Dennison, who singled, in the home first of game two for a 1-0 lead. West Liberty (20-26/17-15 MEC North), though, posted four runs in the third behind a two-run home run from Vincent Haddox. The Hilltoppers' Dalton Davis added home runs in both the fourth and fifth frames to go ahead 8-1. Logan Schickler belted his own solo home run in the sixth for what would be the 8-2 final.

Between games, WJU honored its four seniors – Schickler, Bobby Truelove, Matt Angelini and Michael Finch. For the four Cardinals, Schickler homered and singled with two RBI, including a sac fly. Truelove went 3 for 3 in game two with a double. Angelini was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI in game one. Finch started game two, but he did save the Saturday opener for his final weekend.

Bell struck out three as he allowed only the three singles over seven innings for his second victory and third complete game of the year.

Additionally at the plate, Dennison went 3 for 8 with two runs and a stolen base. Hizer doubled and singled with an RBI in the opener. Jeff Patrick singled in both games with one RBI. Tristan Grimes added a 4 for 7 day with two hits in each game, two runs and a stolen base. TJ Jacob finished the WJU multi-hit player with two singles, a run and a stolen base in game one.
