SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – It was an almost Friday Cardinals softball split. Wheeling Jesuit's seventh-inning rally fell a hit short, 3-1, before it took the extra-inning lead until the storms rolled in against Notre Dame College to suspend the contest.

Trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh, a Cassie Holstein fielder's choice loaded the bases with two out. The Falcons (18-28/13-16 Mountain East Conference North), though, recorded the final out for the opening win.

After seven scoreless frames of the late game, the Cardinals (22-22/18-11 MEC North) received back-to-back, one-out bunt singles from Alaina York and Holstein. Following a second out, Mallory Chapman lined a run-scoring single up the middle to make it 1-0. Then lightning was spotted in the area, the team waited in a delay until the game was suspended at that point of the top of the eighth inning.

In the completed game, York accounted for two of the Cardinals' six hits. The big hit came from sophomore Ashley Ledbetter's top of the fifth solo home run.

Brianna Grimes, Chapman and Heather Pinney added a hit apiece.

Chapman was strong in the circle where she allowed six hits, two runs and a walk to go with six strikeouts. Erin Unterbrink gave up only five hits in seven frames of the late game with eight strikeouts to one walk.

WJU returns home for its 'Senior Day' on Saturday afternoon, April 28, against Urbana. The first pitch will be at 4 p.m.
