Cardinals Put Men on Base, but Falcons Drove Theirs In Sunday

WHEELING, W.Va. – Wheeling Jesuit put its share of runners on base, but it fell short of taking advantage as Notre Dame College prevailed in both ends of Sunday's baseball doubleheader, 2-0 and 9-3.

The Cardinals (4-28/3-21 Mountain East Conference North) had runners on base in six of the seven frames of the opener, but they could not convert. The Falcons (15-25/13-11 MEC North) plated a pair of runs on three hits in the visiting second inning of the opener for what would be the game's only scores. In fact, WJU had one last attempt in the seventh where Logan Schickler led off with a line single and Jeff Patrick reached on an error only to see three-straight outs be recorded.

In the late game, WJU wasted no time in scoring its first runs of the day. With two on and one out in the first, Hayden Hizer singled to right center to drive home Tristan Grimaes and Zach Blumling had an RBI ground out for a 2-0 lead. After a Notre Dame trio of scores in the second, WJU tied it back at 3-3 on a Grimes run-scoring hit down the left field line. The Falcons, though, scored the go ahead run in the third and five runs over their final three at bats for the difference.

WJU saw four multi-hit batters on the day. Grimes doubled and singled with a run and one RBI. Schickler doubled and singled himself in the opener, while Bobby Truelove had two hits and run in the late contest. Blumling singled in each game with one RBI.

Hizer, Matt Angelini and Adam Dennison accounted for the other three Cardinal singles.

WJU heads to western Ohio for a four-game set next Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29, at Urbana.
