Cardinals Take Pair from Hilltoppers Again

WTRF Highlights
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
All four games have been close, but in the Cardinals favor. For the second time in eight days, Wheeling Jesuit took a softball pair from rival West Liberty, 1-0 in eight innings and 2-1.

After allowing a bottom of the first hard lead-off single off her second baseman diving glove, the Cardinals (20-19/16-8 Mountain East Conference North) Mallory Chapman was unhittable. The senior did not allow another for a one-hit shutout. West Liberty (15-19/10-14 MEC North) starter Makenzie Amend was equally tough until extra frames in the top of the eighth where she hit the lead-off pinch hitter Ashley Ledbetter in the leg. Taylor DiPerna re-entered, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before Cassie Holstein's grounder to second was thrown home too late.

Chapman lined a single through the right side of the Hilltopper infield to drive in Holstein in game two's opening at bat. WJU added an insurance run when Jackie Cramer singled and scored two batters later on a West Liberty outfield error in the sixth. The Hilltoppers put one run on the scoreboard in their final at bat compliments of two Cardinal errors, but no more.

In the two doubleheaders, WJU pitching has held West Liberty to only two runs in 29 innings.

Chapman logged 10 innings of work on the day where she earned her 13th victory and second save. The reigning MEC Player of the Week allowed only three hits without an earned run and nine strikeouts and no walks.

Erin Unterbrink (7-8) had a strong five innings of game two with three hits, no runs or walks and fanned four.

Holstein and Brianna Grimes were the only multi-hit WJU players. Holstein also drove in the opener's only run and score one in the late game on her Birthday.

Alaina York doubled, while Chapman, Heather Pinney, Cramer, and DiPerna had one hit apiece.

Amend struck out 12 WJU hitters in the first game for West Liberty.

WJU returns to action on the road this weekend starting at Shepherd on Saturday, April 21. First pitch is at high noon.
