Mt. Lions Edge Cardinals Baseball in Tight Pair

ATHENS, W.Va. – Two well-played Cardinals contests was not quite enough for a win on Sunday. Concord held off Wheeling Jesuit baseball in the opener, before it needed a late 3-run homer to pull out the late contest, both games were 3-1 finals.

Trailing 3-0, Tristan Grimes turned a leadoff double into a run on a Mt. Lions (8-6/2-0 Mountain East Conference South) throwing error to make it 3-1. WJU put runners on each of the final three at bats, including a Zach Blumling seventh-frame double, but could not push any more scores across the plate.

The Cardinals scored first in the opening at bat on a home error after two hits for a 1-0 lead. The score remained until the home sixth when Concord's Evan Webb connected on a 3-run home run.

"We competed very hard, limited free bases and held a very good offensive team to six total runs. Thought both starters (Michael Finch game 1/Josh Bell game 2) challenged hitters all day and gave us a very good chance to win. Our defense was consistent and we made routine plays and gave ourselves a chance to win," said Dan Abbenante, WJU head coach. "Offensively, we need to have better at bats. Challenging the defense is crucial for our offensive production. We have an opportunity to come out tomorrow and give our best effort to take two."

At the plate, Blumling doubled and singled, while Grimes had a double. Brad Trescott singled in each game, while Logan Schickler, Hayden Hizer and Adam Dennison had one hit apiece.

Finch covered five innings on the mound of game one where he allowed seven hits, two earned runs and struck out three. Bell logged six innings where he fanned seven, while giving up five hits and three runs.

WJU returns to action down to UVa.-Wise for a doubleheader starting at noon tomorrow, March 19.
