Cardinals Take Game Two, Give Abbenante First Win

FLORENCE, Ky. – The opening Cardinals diamond results were encouraging. After falling short 12-2 in the first game, Wheeling Jesuit had a strong second game with a 4-2 win over the University of Findlay to give new head coach Dan Abbenante his first baseball coaching win Sunday afternoon.

Fielding miscues cost the Cardinals (1-1) in the opener as the Oilers (1-1) scored nine times in the opening three frames with only three coming by the earned variety. Behind six solid Michael Finch innings, WJU received run-scoring hits by Billy Johnson and Zach Blumling in the seventh, before newcomer Frankie Favede closed the door for the save.

"We responded really well after game one. It was a very gritty team win. Finch had a really good outing and gave us a strong start with six shutout innings. Tristan Grimes has some big momentum at bats. Logan Schickler, Billy Johnson and Zach Blumling had some timely hits for us. Hayden Hizer also had multiple defensive stops and some big at bats," said Abbenante. "The defense was strong in game two and Frankie Favede did a great job closing the game for us."

In only his second game and first doubleheader, first-year coach Abbenante posted his first career head coaching victory. The WJU win also is the fastest one by the program in three years.

Of the 17 WJU hits, senior Schickler lined four hits with a double and an RBI. Johnson drove in a pair of runs and scored once after three singles. Grimes, who doubled and scored twice, and Hizer added three hits apiece. Blumling contributed a game two RBI single.

Finch allowed only four hits with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings of his game two start. Favede gave up one hit with two strikeouts in the eighth and ninth for his save.

WJU returns to the field in North Carolina on Tuesday evening, Feb. 27, in single game at Winston-Salem State.
