Wheeling Jesuit thwarted by Shepherd, 87-70

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (Dec. 8) – The Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team was defeated 87-70 by Shepherd in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the Butcher Athletic Center.

The Cardinals drop to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the MEC with the loss. The Rams jump to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play with the win.

Senior forward Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) registered her seventh double-double of the season by posting 23 points and 13 rebounds.  Junior forward Lauren Lipscomb (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington North) scored a career-high 15 points while shooting 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, while junior guard Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) was the third Cardinal to score in double-digits with 12 points.

With 6:28 left in the first quarter, Moore knocked down a jumper to put Wheeling Jesuit up 10-8. Shepherd then went on a 26-6 run to close out the first quarter leading 34-16. The Rams shot 10-of-12 from the field and 2-of-2 from three point range during the run.

Lipscomb helped the Cardinals narrow the deficit to seven points, 34-27, early in the second quarter by dropping in three trays. Shepherd kept the deficit from narrowing further, however, and went into halftime ahead 47-36.

The Rams secured the victory by outscoring the Cardinals 40-34 in the second half and preventing WJU from making much ground on its halftime lead.

Shepherd distributed the rock well with 20 team assists and kept the ball out of Wheeling Jesuit's hands with 14 team steals.

Kayla Tibbs led the Rams in scoring with 20 points while teammate Kari Lankford dished out 16 assists.

Next up for the Cardinals is a non-conference game in Erie, Pennsylvania at Mercyhurst on Saturday, December 15. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
