SALEM, W.Va. (Dec. 30) - The Wheeling Jesuit University men's basketball team was knocked off 92-79 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals drop to 1-11 overall, while the Tigers improve to 10-5 this season.
Freshman forward
DeAndre Robinson (Monroeville, Ala./Monroe County) registered a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Wheeling Jesuit. Senior guard
Miguel Rodriguez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) established a new career-high with 20 points, while freshman
Franck Kamgain (Kansas City, Mo./DME Sports Academy) chipped in 16 points in the loss.
A Kamgain layup gave the Cardinals a 5-4 lead less than two minutes into the game, before the Tigers responded with a 12-2 run to take a 16-7 lead with 12:57 left in the first half. Wheeling Jesuit rallied to tie the game at 24-24 at the 4:49-mark, but were unable to secure the lead. The Cardinals tied the game back up at 33-33 in the final minute of the half, before the Tigers knocked down a three at the horn to take a 36-33 lead into halftime.
Wheeling Jesuit hung with Salem over the first eight minutes of the second half and trailed by two, 52-50, with 12:35 to play in the game. The Tigers took command of the contest with a 19-1 run over the next four minutes to open up a 71-53 lead with 8:10 left in regulation. The Cardinals clawed back to within nine points, 83-74, with less than three minutes to play, but were unable to overcome the deficit.
Salem held a 36-18 advantage in points-in-the-paint for the afternoon. Malik Toppin posted 31 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Tigers to the win.
The Cardinals will return to Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Thursday, January 10 when they host Charleston at the McDonough Center for a game at 7:30 p.m.
