GREENSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 11) - A late surge sent the Cardinals to a 92-81 loss at Seton Hill Tuesday night in a non-conference game.
The Wheeling Jesuit University men's basketball team falls to 0-10 overall, while the Griffins improve to 2-6 on the season.
Sophomore guard
Brendan Hoban (Watertown, Mass./Milbrook School) finished with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting (66 percent), five rebounds and five assists in the loss. Freshmen
Franck Kamgain (Kansas City, Mo./DME Sports Academy),
Tariq Woody (Canton, Mich./Novi) and
Steve Cannady (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) all scored in double-figures with 15, 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Seton Hill held a 13-12 edge on a three pointer seven minutes into the game, before the Cardinals scored 11-unanswered to establish a 23-13 advantage with 9:20 left in the first half.
The Griffins managed to mount a comeback and tie the game at 30-30 with 2:57 to play until halftime. Seton Hill scored nine-unanswered during the rally, including a three pointer to tie the score. Both teams traded baskets over the final three minutes, with the hosts knocking down a shot at the horn to take a 37-36 lead into halftime. The Griffins flipped the script during the final nine minutes of the first half, outscoring Wheeling Jesuit 24-13 en route to the one-point halftime advantage.
Seton Hill built its lead to five, 41-36, one minute into second half, before the Cardinals went on an 8-3 run to take a 44-43 edge at the 17-minute mark. WJU eventually established its largest lead of the second half at 51-47 with just under 14 minutes to play in the game.
The Griffins controlled the next seven minutes of the contest. Seton Hill out-scored the Cardinals 25 to 11 during the stretch to take a 72-63 lead and force a Wheeling Jesuit timeout. The Griffins kept the pressure on and extended its lead to as many as 16 in the closing minutes to put the game away.
Seton Hill finished the night shooting 50 percent (10 of 20) from three-point range, compared to the 28 percent (5 of 18) posted by Wheeling Jesuit.
The Griffins were led by Malik McKinney's game-high 23 points, while Nathan Davis added 21 in the win.
The Cardinals will return home for their final game before the Christmas holiday. Wheeling Jesuit hosts Penn State-Shenango on Tuesday, December 18 inside the McDonough Center at 6 p.m.
