CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Nov. 4) - The Wheeling Jesuit University men's soccer team was defeated 2-0 by No. 4 Charleston in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championship Match Sunday afternoon at Schoenbaum Stadium.
The Cardinals (10-6-3) will now await to see if they have done enough to warrant an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament at 6 p.m. on Monday. Wheeling Jesuit entered the week at No. 10 in the Atlantic Regional Rankings. Two to six teams will be selected from each of the eight regions. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles (18-0-2) win the MEC Championship and a presumptive No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament. Automatic bids are not awarded into the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament.
Following the contest, sophomore
Lucas Fievet (Pittsburgh, Pa.), freshman
Tore Naess (Surnadal, Norway/Kristiansund) and sophomore goalkeeper
Josh Zimmerman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Franklin Regional) were all selected to the MEC All-Tournament Team.
Charleston, the defending national champion and No. 4 team in the most recent United Soccer Coaches' Association Top-25 poll, struck first on a penalty kick in the 41st-minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Golden Eagles quickly added to their lead with another goal less than four minutes into the second half to take an all but insurmountable 2-0 lead. Charleston entered the day allowing two goals only once all season, when Wheeling Jesuit lost 3-2 earlier this season at Bishop Schmitt Field. The Golden Eagles had allowed goals in only two matches all season.
Charleston out-shot the Cardinals 16-to-5 on the day, with Zimmerman making nine saves in the loss.
If the season has concluded for Wheeling Jesuit, they will have finished the season with 10 wins after a 4-11-2 campaign just a season ago in 2017.
