WHEELING, W.Va. (Nov. 28) – The Wheeling Jesuit University men's basketball team fell to Notre Dame (Ohio) 83-72 in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest on Wednesday night at the McDonough Center.
The Cardinals drop to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in MEC action. Meanwhile, the Falcons move up to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the MEC.
Sophomore
Brendan Hoban (Watertown, Mass./Millbrook School) and freshman
Steve Cannady (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) led the Cardinals in scoring with 15 points each. Senior
Miguel Rodriguez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) chipped in 14 points, while freshman forward
Tariq Woody (Canton, Mich./Novi) grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds in the game.
Neither team filled up the stat sheet early on, resulting in a 16-11 lead for Notre Dame after 10 minutes.
The Falcons went up by seven points, 21-14, after a pair of Larenz Thurman with 8:11 on the clock until halftime. The Cardinals went on a 9-2 run over the next two minutes that culminated in a pair of Rodriguez three pointers, tying the game at 23 all. Notre Dame finished the half strong, going on a 15-4 run to go into the locker rooms with a 38-27 lead.
The Falcons carried their momentum over into the second half, grabbing their largest lead of the game when Hamish Warden drained a tray to put his team up 62-43 with 8:27 remaining in the game. Notre Dame held the lead for the entirety of the contest, except for a 30 second interval in which the game was tied, to claim the conference win.
WJU made 10 of 22 three pointers in the second half to keep the contest in hand. The second half was split evenly, with each team scoring 45 points.
Thurman led all players in scoring with 26 points, while Falcon forward Will Vorhees maintained his double-double average for the season by posting 15 points and grabbing 10 boards.
Wheeling Jesuit travels to Urbana (Ohio) next for a MEC matchup on Saturday, December 1. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
