No. 18 Volleyball sweeps West Liberty, 3-0

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (Oct. 30) - The No. 18 Wheeling Jesuit University volleyball team collected a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-17, 29-27) over West Liberty in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match Tuesday night inside the ASRC.

The win improves the Cardinals, ranked No. 18 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 poll, to 29-3 overall and 14-0 in the MEC. Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers fall to 9-5 in league play, 21-9 overall this season.

Junior Haley Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) posted a match-high 12 kills with four blocks to lead Wheeling Jesuit to the win. Sophomore Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center) registered a kill-dig double-double with 11 kills, a team-high 17 digs and three blocks, while junior setter Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) tossed around 38 assists.

The first set was tied at 4-4, before a 12-to-5 spurt gave the Cardinals a 16-9 lead. West Liberty got as close as six, 21-15, but WJU finished off the Hilltoppers with four-straight points, including a pair of kills by Kramer.

The second set was closely contested early on. After West Liberty tied the match at 12-12, Wheeling Jesuit rolled off seven of the next eight points to take a 19-13 advantage and eventually finished off the Hilltoppers at 25-17 for a two-set lead.

Both teams traded leads in the third set, before the Cardinals came a point away from the win at 24-21. Following a West Liberty timeout, the Hilltoppers rallied to tie the set at 24-24 with three-straight points. Wheeling Jesuit managed to reach match-point four more times, before finally closing out the third set with a kill by sophomore Makenna Babb (Arlington, Ohio/McComb) and a Kramer block to win 29-27.

The Cardinals frustrated the Hilltopper hitters all night. WJU limited West Liberty to a .120 hitting percentage and forced 24 attack errors, including 12 in the second set.

Wheeling Jesuit finishes up the regular-season this weekend with home matches on Friday and Saturday, November 2 and 3 against Urbana and Notre Dame (Ohio). The match Friday night against Urbana is set for 6 p.m.
