WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 27) - The Wheeling Jesuit University women's soccer team closed out the 2018 season with a 3-2 loss to West Liberty on Senior Day at Bishop Schmitt Field on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals close out the season with a record of 3-13-1, 2-10-1 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC). Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers improve to 6-8-3, 6-5-2 in league play.
The Cardinals got off to one of its best starts to a match this season with two goals in the first 21 minutes. Senior
Emily Hartley (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) sent a ball into the box that was misplayed by the West Liberty goalkeeper. The ball found the foot of senior
Kayla Klock (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air), who sent the ball into the empty net to make the score 1-0 in the 16th-minute.
Wheeling Jesuit added to its lead less than five minutes later when a headed ball by senior
Cameron Smith (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) rebounded off of the goalkeeper and was finished by Hartley to increase the lead to two.
West Liberty managed to slice its deficit in half with a goal in the 32nd-minute on a ball that got behind the Cardinal back-line in the box, but Wheeling Jesuit held the lead heading into halftime.
After 23 scoreless minutes in the second half, the Hilltoppers evened the score on a ball from the far left side of the field that was ricocheted off of the Cardinal keeper and into the net.
The Cardinals had five shot attempts in the final 22 minutes of the match, but none found their intended target. West Liberty managed to net the game-winning goal in the 88th-minute off of a corner-kick. The ball bounced around in the box before a Hilltopper scored by directing the ball into the net with her back to the goal to give West Liberty a 3-2 lead.

Asya Carney (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) made a trio of saves in the loss.
The Cardinals held a 17-to-15 edge in total shots in the match.
