FAIRMONT, W.Va. (Oct. 20) - Led by a pair of kill-dig double-doubles from sophomores
Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center) and
Makenna Babb (Arlington, Ohio/McComb), the No. 20 Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-17, 25-17) over Fairmont State Saturday evening at Joe Retton Arena.
The Cardinals improve to 24-3 overall, 11-0 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC). Meanwhile, the Falcons drop to 5-6 in league play, 11-13 overall.
Meyer posted 17 kills and 10 digs, while Babb recorded 13 kills and a team-best 13 digs in the win. Junior
Haley Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) added nine kills with five blocks on defense, while junior setter
Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) tossed around 45 assists.
Fairmont State led the first set 7-5 early on, before the Cardinals assumed control with nine of the next 11 points to take a 14-9 advantage. The Falcons drew back within three, 17-14, but did not get any closer before Wheeling Jesuit closed out a 25-20 win.
Similarly to the first set, Fairmont State built an early lead at 7-3, but once again the Cardinals made a big run. WJU took 13 of the next 16, including a run of eight-straight points, to establish a 16-10 lead. Once again the Falcons clawed back to within three points at 17-14, but the Wheeling Jesuit put away Fairmont State with eight out of the following 11 points to take a 25-17 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Cardinals never trailed in the third and final set and managed to comfortably pull away for the 3-0 sweep. Fairmont State trailed 6-5 early in the set, but yielded five-straight points to WJU and never came any closer in the 25-17 clincher.
Wheeling Jesuit returns home on Tuesday, October 30 to take on Walsh (15-10, 11-3 G-MAC) in a non-conference match at the McDonough Center at 7 p.m.
